We've Got Ocelot to Celebrate!

The Greenville Zoo recently welcomed two ocelot kittens, an exciting milestone for our animal care team and a meaningful contribution to the conservation of this remarkable species.

Their birth is part of a collaborative effort among accredited zoos across North America to help ensure a healthy future for the species through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP) Program. The SSP brings together experts from AZA-accredited institutions to carefully manage animal populations through science-based breeding recommendations and long-term genetic planning.

For species like the ocelot, every successful birth helps maintain genetic diversity and supports the long-term sustainability of the population. That work is especially important because ocelots face significant challenges in the wild. While they can be found throughout parts of Central and South America, a small population remains in the United States primarily in South Texas, where fewer than 100 individuals are believed to remain. Conservation organizations, researchers, and accredited zoos are working together to help protect the future of the species through research, habitat protection, and population management.

At the Greenville Zoo, we are proud to be part of that collective effort.

For now, our newest arrivals are spending their days behind the scenes, nestled safely with their mother as they grow and reach important developmental milestones.

As they grow, they'll become part of a much larger story, one that stretches beyond Greenville.

We are grateful to the supporters who make this work possible. Your generosity helps create moments like this and supports the important work happening every day at the Greenville Zoo.
