Growing Up Fast: An Update on the Two Amur Leopard Cubs

The Amur leopard cubs born at the Greenville Zoo in May are growing quickly and doing well. Now, they have names to match their growing personalities: Kingston, a male, and Devon, a female.

The cubs were named by generous Zoo supporters Peter and Britt Melhado. We are grateful for their support and dedication to the Zoo’s mission, and excited to officially introduce Kingston and Devon!

As Kingston and Devon grow, they are beginning to participate in training sessions with the animal care team. The cubs are learning to come to a designated feeding station when requested, an important skill that allows the team to work with them while supporting their growing independence. They are still nursing some, but are also eating solid food twice a day, just like their parents, Irina and Basha.

Training is also giving the animal care team a closer look at the personalities emerging in each cub.

Kingston is a little more timid and is still figuring out his place during training and mealtimes. He is making steady progress as he becomes more comfortable with the process, and the animal care team is excited to see him finding his confidence.

Devon has a loud and proud personality. She is especially vocal at mealtimes and has already picked up on the training routine. When it is time for her morning and evening meals, Devon goes to her spot and follows Irina’s lead.

Watching these two learn and grow is giving the animal care team new glimpses into who Kingston and Devon are becoming. Their different personalities are already shining through, even as both cubs continue to build confidence and independence through their training.
