Behind the Scenes with the Greenville Zoo Veterinary Team

Every day at the Greenville Zoo, remarkable care happens behind the scenes thanks to a small but mighty veterinary team, led by Dr. Nikolay Kapustin.. Their work ensures that every animal, from the tiniest reptile to the tallest giraffe, receives world-class medical attention.

For more than a decade, Veterinary Technician Sarah Schwenzer has been at the heart of this work. No two days are ever the same. One morning might include assisting with a dental procedure, while the afternoon could involve scheduling treatments, managing supplies, or conducting a wellness exam. Sarah especially values her role as a connector, keeping open communication flowing between animal care specialists and the veterinary department. “My door is always open,” she says.

One of the Zoo’s most innovative approaches is its operant conditioning training program, which Sarah calls one of her greatest passions. Through positive reinforcement, animals are empowered to voluntarily participate in their own medical care. That means giraffes step onto a scale by choice, primates present an arm for blood collection, and even big cats can cooperate in ultrasounds or x-rays.

“This training makes everything less stressful for the animals,” Sarah explains. “It builds trust, creates positive relationships, and allows us to help with research projects that are non-invasive.” The program is a shining example of the Zoo’s commitment to animal welfare at the highest standard.

The Greenville Zoo Foundation plays a direct role in advancing this exceptional level of care. Recently, donor support allowed the veterinary team to acquire a state-of-the-art digital x-ray system. The images are sharper, faster, and more detailed than ever before, giving the team a clearer view into animal health and improving their ability to provide top-notch treatment.

The Foundation also strengthens vital partnerships in the community. The veterinary team regularly works with Upstate Vet Emergency and Specialty Care, which generously donates services such as advanced imaging, neurology, oncology, and more.

Sarah is always eager to give donors and board members a first-hand look at the work being done in the Zoo’s hospital. Whether observing an exam or seeing the new digital radiography in action, guests are often surprised to learn just how advanced the Zoo’s veterinary operations are. These moments offer a powerful reminder: every gift to the Foundation helps support the very best for the animals who call Greenville Zoo home.
